Fukushima : Tepco makes a further withdrawal of fuel pool 4
New delicate operation to the operator of the Fukushima accident Tuesday. This time , the company Tokyo Electric Power ( Tepco ) said it would remove the spent pool of reactor 4 fuel, which makes it even more difficult task because it is more radioactive than nine extracted first .
Tepco had performed smoothly from 18 to 22 November, a first extraction of 22 new fuel assemblies on the 1533 (including 202 new ) transferring the pool 4 a common pool said , much safer . " We will act the same way as the first , but with extreme caution , because the fuel is more sensitive ," said Tepco press .

Tuesday morning , the company plunged into the pool 4 a cylindrical container 5.5 meters high and 2.1 in diameter. Thereafter, it should begin to transfer one by one 22 spent fuel assemblies ( maximum capacity of the container ) , all thanks to a crane and remote equipment to accomplish these difficult manipulations leaving assemblies permanently submerged
A NEW CHAPTER
Remove fuel assemblies in a spent fuel pool is a common task in nuclear and Tepco has done some 1200 times in four decades of operating reactors, but this is the first time that such an operation is performed in a rugged environment where technicians must work protective suits and wear full masks to protect themselves from radioactivity.
It is also the most delicate operation since the stabilization of the site in December 2011, six months after the tsunami that ravaged . " The withdrawal opens an important new chapter in our task of dismantling " , which will last forty years , commented the CEO of Tepco , Naomi Hirose .
